WELCOME!
this blog was created as part of a statistics project.
it captures some of what we did in finding out
more about the work of
Da Vinci.

cheers.

The mighty group!

We are Occupational Therapy Students from Nanyang Polytechnic doing up a project for Statistics module.
Assigned to choose a topic of our choice, we decided to discover more about Da Vinci's theory of his Vitruvian man drawing.
Thus we embark on an exciting journey using statistical approach. Do enjoy our blog! (:
3 - Methodology.
HOW DATA WAS COLLECTED
Age range:
18-40 years old
EXTRA CONSIDERATIONS
Standardised scale:
We reduced scale error by getting 2 measuring tapes
produced from the same factory
so that there will be minimal discrepancies in the tape measurement.
Parallax Error:
The height of some subjects who are much taller or shorter than data collector
may be inaccurate due to parallax error.
Hence we made sure data collector is at the eye level of the measurement point.
Plane Errors:
To reduce plane errors, we used a flat firm file
to align the tip of the head and hands with the measuring tape
to form a perpendicular angle to the tape.
Flat surface:
We chose a flat ground surface to take measurements
to make sure that there are no slopes or uneven surfaces
which may cause the heights of our subjects to vary.
Measure at the same time of the day:
We made sure we measured our subjects
all at the same time of the day
to avoid discrepancies of height and wingspan throughout the day.
"In theory, observations should be undertaken
at approximately the same time of the day
and following a similar pattern of activity" (Buckler,1978)
(similar pattern of activity: coming to school)
Other considerations:
Factors affecting height of the subjects such as clips, hairband, footwear
HOW SAMPLES WERE GATHERED
Convenience Sampling:
We did a convenience sampling with nyp staff
and students along the corridor of H519 at 2pm to 3pm.
WHAT WE USED TO MEASURE
A 150cm long measuring tape
(same brand as the measuring tape used to measure wingspan)
to measure the height.
The measurement starts 50cm from the ground
so as to allow us measure a range up to 200cm.
HOW OFTEN
Average of 3 readings of height and wingspan each.
REJECTION
Rejection by some subjects due to inconvenient timing
(e.g. rushing for class).
